CHAPTER SIX

“Ready?” Jena asked Dee. She pulled her keys out of her pocket and fastened her seat belt.

Dee nodded. “Where does Dr. Rainbolt live?”

“His house is on the Rebel Ranch property. Mitch and Reece run a guest ranch there. You know, like a dude ranch.”

“Got it. Let me see if I have all of this straight. Mitch is married to Daisy and they have five adopted children and twins of their own.”

“Correct.”

Dee held up her hand and rattled off the names of each of Mitch and Daisy’s children on her fingers.

“Now that is impressive. I’m not sure I could do that.”

“Reece is married to Claire and they have a daughter.”

Jena nodded and then looked both ways at the stop sign at Rebel Avenue and First Street before proceeding out of town.

“Then there’s Dr. Rainbolt and Hazel and Ginger, of course. Kate, his sister, is the youngest Rainbolt, and she is single.”

“Correct again. How long did it take you to memorize that?”

“I put notes in my phone.”

“That works. You’ll look like you’re checking messages and instead you’re reviewing notes. I should try that. It might make these social gatherings less phobic for me.”

A comfortable silence stretched between them as Dee stared out at the scenery they passed on the way out of town, and Jena did her best to mentally prepare for the day. Her first close encounter with Tucker since last Friday’s total fail.

She had done her best to appear normal when she returned to the break room after his announcement, but she suspected everyone knew she was upset. Or maybe not, because they were upset. The entire office had been tense and silent, like a giant sob waiting to erupt.

Since then, Tucker had given her a wide berth and had been overly chipper and upbeat in the office. He hadn’t once mentioned Texas.

By the time Jena had finished mulling over the situation over the weekend, she was forced to admit that the dynamics between her and Tucker had evolved since that fateful trip to Texas.

She didn’t understand it, but at some point she’d crossed the line and had begun to see him as a man and not simply her best friend. It was a dangerous revelation, but there it was, and she couldn’t undo the domino effect of unexpected feelings that accompanied the discovery.

Today she sorely regretted committing to Thanksgiving with the Rainbolts. But she wouldn’t disappoint Dee.

“That was some news Dr. Rainbolt gave us on Friday,” Dee said. “Everyone was talking about it afterward.”

Jena shot Dee a quick glance. Had she been reading her mind?

“You know. About him leaving,” Dee continued.

“I guess that’s to be expected,” Jena returned. “Seven years is a long time.”

“It is. I’ve caught Mrs. Parker crying several times.”

“What?” Poor Nolie. Beneath her labile emotions and tendency to dramatize beat a pure heart. Magnolia Parker really loved everyone at the clinic like her own children.

“She told me not to tell you. But I figured you would want to know.”

“Thank you. I’ll speak to her.”

“Aren’t you totally gutted, Dr.
